Stencils for Walls allow us to open a window where there was once none. Make a scene on a blank wall, invite the outdoors in or custom design your own wall paper. It’s easy with stencils!
Chances are you’re like me – you like to dabble with the paints but maybe a little intimidated about getting the right size, proportions, angles, symmetry and perspective into a painting especially one on a wall. No problem! Stencils to the rescue.
(Psssst! Don't miss the video near the bottom of this page.)
Stencils for walls allow us to put the image in place. From there it’s easier for us to customize the painting for that original hand painted look by adding shadows or highlights. Not to mention that by using stencils for walls you can decide on the colors for your painting. You’re not stuck with whatever you can buy pre-made.
For a variety of stencils for walls don’t miss the ones I have suggested below this article. Our goal at All About Stencils is to provide you with not only stenciling ideas but beautiful stencil designs too!
Ideas for using stencils for walls can be almost unlimited. Are you planning a mural or using one pattern over and over for a unique wall paper design? Can you see the possibilities?
Maybe you want to start out with a simple plan. How about
Stenciling Wall Borders like the one above? It will surprise you how easy it is and what a statement it makes. I even have the process on video for you to follow along with me as I set up and paint this border. But don't miss the Free
Grapevine Stencil.
If it’s a mural that you are planning (like this one), then you should watch this great video on Stencil Wall Murals that will give you the step by step plan for what seems like such a grand undertaking (but really isn’t). Of all the stencils for walls that I toyed with, creating this Garden with Fountain Scene was very fun and exciting.
The best way to learn how to work with stencils for walls is by watching. Besides, seeing something in action helps take away some of the intimidation we may feel about putting paint to the wall. Also there is far more information that can be conveyed to you in a video than by written words.
Maybe your idea for a mural involves a tropical paradise. If so don’t miss this Palm Tree Wall Stencil. So, if you are planning to cover your walls with a single pattern to create a custom wall paper effect don’t miss the video on this process at Wall Stencils. You will see how to line up the stencils for walls so that your spacing is perfect.
You probably have already worked with stencils before to have come to this point (But if not, don’t worry because I’ve got you covered – Just go to
How To Stencil for all the basics). So you know how to tack your stencil in place and use a clean dry brush with a pouncing motion to blot on the paint – never a back and forth sweeping which will push paint underneath the stencil and smear. Good!
OK – Now you need to get your stencils for walls sized. I use paper stencils because they have a few advantages. The most important one here is that you can adjust the size to fit your project area. Just take the paper stencil to a copier and reduce or enlarge. Then cut out the stencil openings. It's that easy and you can’t do that with a plastic stencil.
The reason that size adjustment is so crucial here is because if the image to be painted is for a mural then it has to fit your design plan (it may need to be life size) or if your design is for a repeating pattern it needs to be pleasing to the eye (not too large or overbearing).
Are you new to working with paper stencils? If so you should know that you can prepare your paper stencils so that they can be used again and again. Get a roll of clear shelf/drawer liner. Cut sections the size of your stencil, peel off the back and cover the entire top side of the stencil. Burnish or rub down to get the air pockets out. That’s it.
By the way, I like to do just the top side of the paper. If the bottom is slick it can encourage paint to bleed under the stencil and smudge your surface. The underside may get wet when you wash it but just let it dry and you can flatten it back out by storing it in a book.
