Stencil Wall Murals allow us to open a window where there was once none. Make a scene on a blank wall or invite the outdoors in. It’s easy with stencils!
Like I always say you don’t have to be a Da Vinci to create art as long as you have stencils. Well, in this case it would be Michelangelo because we’ll be working with stencil wall murals.
Chances are you’re like me – you like to dabble with the paints but maybe a little intimidated about getting the right size, proportions, angles, symmetry and perspective into a painting especially one on a wall. No problem! Stencils to the rescue.
You probably have already worked with stencils before to have come to this point (But if not, don’t worry because I’ve got you covered – Just go to How To Stencil for all the basics). So you know how to tack your stencil in place and use a clean dry brush with a pouncing motion to blot on the paint – never a back and forth sweeping which will push paint underneath the stencil and smear. Good!
OK – Now you need to get your designs sized for your stencil wall murals. I use paper stencils because they have a few advantages. The most important one here is that you can adjust the size to fit your stencil wall mural. Just take the paper stencil to a copier and reduce or enlarge. Then cut out the stencil openings. It's that easy and you can’t do that with a plastic stencil. The reason that size adjustment is so crucial here is because the image to be painted has to fit your wall space and has to be life size.
For a variety of wall painting stencils that will fit well in your stencil wall murals don’t miss the ones I have suggested below this article.
These stencils may be quite large so you may need to copy parts onto different sheets of paper and then splice them together. To do that, trim along the edges of the paper to the stencil lines. Then connect the lines and tape the pages together. Now you have one huge stencil wall murals pattern.
I know it's hard to imagine
Mural Stenciling just by reading the words so I created a quick video for you to follow along with me in person. It's near the bottom of this page so keep reading and then tune in!
Are you new to working with paper stencils? If so (or even if not) you should know that you can prepare your paper stencils so that they can be used again and again. It’s easy. Do you have some of that clear, wide packing tape? Just use it to run even strips covering all of the paper surfaces before you cut out the stencil. Burnish or rub the tape down to get the air pockets out. That’s it.
However, for this project since you will be working with large stencils, I recommend that you get a roll of clear shelf liner to cover your stencils before cutting them out. You just cut it to size peel off the back and stick it to the front of your stencil (before you cut out the openings). It’s so much easier and it’s really not expensive at all. You’ll love the ease this provides.
By the way, I like to do just the top side of the paper. If the bottom is slick it can encourage paint to bleed under the stencil and smudge your surface. The underside may get wet when you wash it but just let it dry and you can flatten it back out by storing it in a book.

OK – You’ve got your stencil wall mural patterns ready to go. But first, do you need a back drop. I’m painting a fountain in a garden. My stencils are the fountain and a few flowers. But they would look kind of sparse on a plain white wall right? So, I created a background with a blue sky and some greenery. My fountain and the flowers will be painted on top of the greenery. So, you see it’s important to build your painting from the furthest point back and use your stencils for the foreground.
Now you have your background in place? Great! Secure your stencil wall murals where you want to paint the images and start painting. Remember you are the designer so put flowers or bugs or garden stones where you want.
Well, that’s it in a nutshell. The hard part will be getting your stencils the right size. To create stencil wall murals spend a good amount of time in the preparation and planning. That way the production will be a raving success!
